Minworth Project Wins Clean Up Award

12th June 2008

The Minworth Project recently came runner-up in the Sustainabilitylive! Consultancy awards in the Sustainable Clean Up Category. Sustainabilitylive! took place at the NEC, Birmingham from 20 - 22 May 2008 and is the UK’s largest forum for excellence and innovation in environment, water, energy and land.

Developed by dcarbon8 for ProLogis, Minworth is a sewage waste management and methane mitigation project near Birmingham, which generated 147,227 Voluntary Emissions Reductions for ProLogis.

dcarbon8 established Minworth as a carbon project, probably one of the last in the UK. It has been widely documented that anaerobic lagoons significantly contribute to global warming through the direct release of methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N20) into the atmosphere. dcarbon8 established Verified Emission Reductions (VERs) for the voluntary carbon market through the capping of the Minworth sewage sludge lagoon using a cement and lime technology that traps the global warming gases and creates a hard surface.

The sale of the VERs resulting from the capping and the consequent carbon sequestration will be used to recoup the financial burden of the extra remediation work or alternatively will be used to make other ProLogis activities Planet Positive.

The Minworth project has been recognized for the excellent solution to sewage treatment, methane mitigation and land remediation that it represents.
